Debt Deal: No Shared Sacrifice
Congress and the White House have finally agreed to a debt-ceiling deal that averts a default crisis manufactured by Republican leaders. Preventing default was crucial, but this deeply flawed legislation asks for no shared sacrifice from the wealthiest Americans and makes steep spending cuts with potentially severe consequences for vulnerable families.
It would have been worse if not for mainstream faith leaders’ tireless efforts to prevent immoral budget decisions. Thanks in part to our community’s witness, Medicaid and protections for low-income Americans are shielded from harmful funding cuts (at least for now). And make no mistake: these programs were squarely on the chopping block. The Cut, Cap and Balance legislation passed by the Republican-controlled House and supported by the Religious Right would have eviscerated our safety net.

Your Story Can Make a Difference
Help Document Results of
Budget Cuts
|
- College now out of reach for your family?
- Seen the cost of health care driven up?
- Lose support from the Unemployed Parent Program?
- Denied help by elimination of funding for the Tobacco Prevention/Quit Line and the Farmers Market Program?
- Affected by loss of the NH Foster Grandparent Program, RSVP, Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Caregiver Program, and Congregate Housing Supports?
How did you lose your benefits?
How do these things affect you?
We need stories of families and individuals in crisis to help others see the real stories behind the budget issues in New Hampshire.

Recently talks to raise the nation’s debt ceiling have gone in an ominous direction. Cuts are being proposed to programs that support struggling individuals and families. Yet the Pentagon’s bloated budget remains largely untouched. And those pushing to keep tax cuts for the nation’s wealthiest people utterly reject calls for shared sacrifice.
Those voices also are demanding “balanced-budget” measures which would impose across-the-board spending caps. Such measures would cripple the US’ ability to respond to economic, environmental, or other crises.
Make your voice heard. Call your members of Congress, using this toll-free number provided by AFSCME: 1-888-907-1485.
Remind them that spending on two wars, huge increases in other Pentagon spending, reduced taxes on the rich and the rising cost of health care are the main causes of our deficit problem. Demand they support deeper cuts to military spending and an end to the Bush era tax cuts.

Getting to know the 'Cut, Cap, and Balance Act'
By - Washington Monthly, Political Animal
To call this plan "extreme" is almost a comical understatement. Remember the radicalism of Paul Ryan's budget plan? "Cut, Cap, and Balance" makes Ryan's plan look centrist by comparison.

From Michael Livingston - Director, National Council of Churches Poverty Initiative
As debates over the federal budget continue, the most vulnerable and poor members of our society are being forgotten. Will you sign a letter to the Obama administration and Congress to re-direct their priorities to care for the "least of these?" The National Council of Churches will personally hand deliver this letter to Congress and send it to the President. Read the text of the letter below. Sign the Letter here.
Letter to Congress and the President
As a person of faith committed to justice for all people living in poverty, I urge you to please consider the moral choices before you in the budget debate. People of faith make sacrifices every day to serve people suffering from hunger, homelessness, illness, and lack of education access. Many of our faith-based programs and services receive government support. Further cuts to such vital programs that provide much needed healthcare, nutrition, housing, and education assistance will result in immeasurable human suffering.
Scripture calls for us to care for “the least of these”—people living in poverty. I believe you should work to protect programs that provide a safety net for the most vulnerable among us. The well-being of millions of people and our nation is at stake.
Sincerely,
(Your Name)
